Current Events 2018 – Take Three

Continuing our list of current events for 2018 (covered in posts on 7/31 and 8/1), it is interesting to note that all 10 topics are repeated year after year. That is a mark of their importance in our lives. We left off with #7, Environmental Protection. And now we continue with:

8.      Global Community: Understanding the need for environmental protection also makes us a good neighbor in the global community. America’s economic engine has done great damage to soil, water and air. We have shared our excesses abundantly with the rest of the planet and helped make it unhealthy for everyone else. We are not the only nation doing this, but we are the biggest offender. So, environmental protection costs are our dues to belong to the global community. Our wealth should be shared to make others whole as well. They will become self-sustaining and healthy neighbors as well. It is common sense to fully participate in the global community via shared cultures, economics, and open trade. It is healthy for us, them and all of us together. It will take years of practice and adjustment to get it right, but the payoff is enormous in so many ways.

9.      Immigration Reform: Our nation has always been built on our immigrants. They have been the source of new energy, more consumers, fresh thinking, creativity and shared cultures. Our immigrant diversity is the strength of America. This comes from the global community, so we can be better and more productive. This helps us be good global neighbors, too. What goes around comes around. Again, it is commonsense. Much is wrong with our current immigration system. We need to get it right to prove we are the humanitarians we think we are.

10.  World Peace: If all the above is happening, don’t you think world peace would be more attainable? If this is true, defensive postures and military expenses would be much less too. That happenstance would help all of us live better, more productive and happier lives in a world with less fear and terror in it. That is how peace is spelled. The absence of fear, distrust and hostility is the basis of all peace. Think about it.

Some will say this is utopian thinking. I counter with this: thinking of the ideal helps us improve on current situations. Projecting the desired outcome helps make it happen. We are motivated to try. That’s how we got men to the moon and back without loss of life.

Will it be fully attained? Probably not, but it will guide us forward to better opportunities that may reap the ideal for future generations. Meanwhile, we are rewarded by the effort to achieve great things in our own lives. It is the promise of the future. It is hope. For each of us. And purpose!
