And the Second Day...of a blog

I awoke this morning realizing I had to post to the blog. What to say? What was my temper? What was important? But first the coffee was to be made, then finish the edit proofs for our current newspaper issue (Village Chronicles: www.villagechronicles.net), followed quickly by all the emails, then my Internet routine, and finally the blog posting.

Oops. It's the second day of the blog and I don't remember how to get into the blog site and compose the posting. Argh! Rocky to the rescue as usual in technical matters. Rocky is my untangler of cords, technobabble, computer glitches, VCR and DVR commands, and all the rest! I use these things as tools, not as life blood, so I don't really know how to control them. They control me. Perhaps this is not so unusual for someone over 65?!

Finally. Temper tantrums aside and Rocky successfully unlocking the holy vessel, I am once again at the keyboard. That may or may not be a good thing! One must never take himself too seriously! Yeah, sure!!! I'm not that mellow yet.

So what to post? Let's see, the news last night; nope, I turned it off before it vexed me too much. A church meeting? Good but perhaps too bland for the readers. Dancing With The Stars? Oh puhleeez! This is the first partial season we've watched the program and I doubt we will last another week; too drab and shallow. No, another thought venue to pursue beckons.....

A quick glance out the window. It is 6:15 am and there is a soft glow in the eastern sky; dark blue/black with a hint of light and a tinge of orange.

Now, to those non-midwesterners, this is perhaps not an earthshattering event. But to us natives, it is.

Ours has been a treacherous late summer and early fall. We experienced a very odd weather phenomenon where the jet stream nearly folded back on itself and produced a swirling counter eddy of massive proportions overahead. This weather pattern lasted two full weeks and pulled damp air from Lake Michigan and dumped rain and cool temps on Illinois (Chicago and suburbs mostly). This condition became quite stationary. Day was nearly dark as night. Temperatures normally in the 80's and 90's were in the 50's, possibly reaching a daytime high of 60! Air conditioning was turned off. Furnaces were lit for evenings. Sweaters and light blankets were pulled from hiding.  Brrr!

Depressing for sure. Unseasonal. Boring. Gloomy.

Then the 'thing' moved to the east and cast its gloom on New York City. But for us.....

The sun emerged, soft wafting breezes pushed gently at our skin, trees began their autumnal shift in hues, and the temperatures resumed their 60's and 70's. It was a soft air moment, a time when the body and the weather bubble surrounding us are one and the same in temperature, temperment and mood.

It is Golden!

For those who do not live in a four-season area, this is perhaps the most perfect season of all. It is kind and embracing. It allows us to be calm and introspective. It is a blessing.

May you find a little bit of this peace for yourself.
