I am not a weatherman but I do sense the mood of the people.
They are ready for spring, especially those of us living in the Midwest. Here spring
has been on and off, mostly off. We continue to be reminded that Mother Nature
is in charge here; snow will come when rain and freezing temps collide. This has
occurred more than a few times since late March, a time when we look longingly
for signs of spring.
Well they are here today, April 19th. The temperature
at 4:30 am was 32. The high is forecast for 48 and full sun. Weather maps show
nothing in our region but the back end of a storm now moving swiftly through
Indiana, Ohio and parts east. Good riddance, we say!
A closer look at the forecast notices warming temps: low 50’s
Friday, and rising slowly to 61 for Monday. I’m not looking farther than that;
the trend is modestly rising temps and that is good enough for me.
So, the skiffs of snow that greeted us this morning will be
gone by 10 am. Pansies and daffodils will continue their bloom. Tulips are next
to arrive. Forsythia has probably sprung forth already; we don’t have much of
that in our region. Red Bud is soon to follow. Trees are budding and the recent
storms have blown off the bud husks. Leaves will soon show up with their early
hints of yellowish green. That’s a harbinger I yearn for each year.
We have made the cut. The winter is over. It was not a bad
winter, just overstayed its welcome.
So now, let us plan gardens, sweeping of walkways and
driveways, replanting flower beds, an raking and feeding the lawn. Soon green
grass will be begging for a mowing. Weeds will be sprouting. And lush trees
will provide the shade from a too warm sun. Summer is sure to follow.
In the Midwest, spring may follow winter, but summer often
follows winter so quickly as to elbow out spring’s sweet transition. At
this point, I’m ready for a jolt into summer!
How about you?
