Paws

Four paws appeared at the edge of the room. A small room. But then the paws were little, too. Like a kitten but not quite so. Either a small adult animal or a large kitten threatening to be quite large in time.

Stealthy baby steps. Into the room. Sniffing air to see what else is there. That it should be aware of. Step. Step. Edging carefully into the unexplored space.

Baby. The smell of infant. Sort of sweet, with a touch of sour; milk? Maybe. But still a sweetness in the air. The small cat senses this. Approaches more quickly now. Perched on floor next to what becomes the crib. High up but a chest on the floor is handy, and next to the changing table too. And from there….

On the mattress now. Small bundle of warm is huddled in the middle of the bed. Mewling sounds and small breaths are audible. Feline approaches. Nose twitching. Eyes alert. Ears pivoting on their axis sweeping the room space for sounds of danger.

None. Safe to approach. Full on. Tentative touch of nose to baby’s hand. Warm. Soft. Unsteady and waving a bit. This is a young being. Not a cat. Not a kitten. Not one of those things that barks, either. No this is…human. Doesn't look like it. But it is…human.

No wonder the big people go in and out of this room. All day and all night. In and out. Checking. Whispering. Treading on toes with very little sound.

The picture is forming. The big people have brought home a little people. Maybe it will grow to look like them. maybe not. How long might that take? Well, not for a cat’s mind to ponder too long. Not enough time.

Food. That’s next on the agenda. Where is it they left my food. And why didn't they call me to dinner? Must be distracted. Figures. A new person in the house and they forget me easily.

Wonder if this newcomer is permanent or just a guest? We shall have to watch what happens. Meantime, look for meal. Not up here on the bed. Down lower, you know? Where I can reach it.

That’s a laugh! Where I can reach it. Like I can’t jump high and check things out. Food or otherwise.

When will these humans learn?
